ADÉLA steps fully into her movie star fantasy with the official video for “Nicole Kidman,” transforming several of the Oscar winning actress’ most memorable screen moments into a glamorous and playful visual. The track appears on the Slovak pop singer’s debut album, PRIMA, which arrived Sept. 4.
Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, the video turns ADÉLA into a succession of characters inspired by Kidman’s filmography. References range from Eyes Wide Shut and Birth to Moulin Rouge! and the more recent Babygirl, allowing ADÉLA to move between sensuality, old Hollywood glamour and exaggerated pop star confidence.
The clip opens with one of its most direct nods to Babygirl, before shifting through elaborate outfits, choreography and cinematic setups. Later, ADÉLA embraces the theatrical glamour of Kidman’s Satine from Moulin Rouge!, while the closing sequence recreates another piece of modern Nicole Kidman pop culture: her now famous AMC theaters commercial.
Those references fit naturally with the song itself. “Nicole Kidman” is built around confidence, luxury and the feeling of stepping into a larger than life version of yourself. Over bass heavy production from Blake Slatkin and Dylan Brady, ADÉLA delivers the song with a deliberately restrained vocal performance, creating a contrast between her softer delivery and the track’s self assured attitude.
The title came from a surprisingly literal moment. ADÉLA explained that the idea arrived after she attended a Golden Globes event, where she was dressed up with styled hair and an especially tight corset. Feeling unusually glamorous, she thought she felt like Nicole Kidman. Her fascination grew after watching Eyes Wide Shut, with ADÉLA describing Kidman as the embodiment of a true movie star.
There is also a fitting connection between the song’s subject and the artist behind it. Ahead of the video’s release, Kidman acknowledged ADÉLA during the London premiere of Practical Magic 2, saying she knew who the singer was and planned to attend her Nashville show on The Red Bottoms Tour.
“Nicole Kidman” arrives as one of the standout moments from PRIMA, an 11 track debut that also includes “KGB,” “Red Bottoms,” “Therapy” and breakout single “Ain’t In LA.” ADÉLA has described the album as an attempt to capture the contradictions of being a 22 year old woman, mixing vulnerability and confidence with harder production and feminine energy.
With “Nicole Kidman,” ADÉLA turns admiration into a full pop spectacle. Rather than simply name checking one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, she builds an entire visual world around Kidman’s career, using fashion, choreography and film references to reinforce the confidence at the heart of the song.
