Carly Rae Jepsen is turning an ordinary night out into a royal fantasy with the official music video for “Versailles.” Released Sept. 18 alongside her ninth studio album, Day and Night, the song draws inspiration from Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette, bringing its extravagant spirit and appetite for pleasure into Jepsen’s colorful pop world.
Directed by Kanya Iwana and filmed in Los Angeles, the video follows Jepsen as she dances at a party while imagining herself inside the famous French palace. As the celebration unfolds, the setting becomes a backdrop for her fantasy of a night filled with romance, freedom and indulgence. Rather than recreating the historical world of Versailles, the visual brings its atmosphere of extravagance into a modern pop setting.
The song captures that same desire to escape the ordinary. Inspired by Coppola’s portrayal of Marie Antoinette, Jepsen imagines a night where she can abandon expectations and embrace whatever makes her feel alive. The palace becomes less of a destination and more of a symbol of possibility, representing the kind of unforgettable experience that can make an ordinary evening feel extraordinary.
Musically, “Versailles” pairs Jepsen’s bright pop sensibilities with a restless, playful energy. The track was written by Jepsen alongside Elias Kapari, Noonie Bao and Markus Krunegård, with Kapari handling production. Its lively sound and romantic imagery make it a natural fit for the more whimsical side of her latest album.
The release also offers a glimpse into the creative concept behind Day and Night. The double album explores two distinct musical moods, with the Day portion embracing organic textures, dreamy melodies and more experimental pop arrangements, while Night moves toward darker synthesizers and dance floor influences. “Versailles” appears on the Day side, although its fantasy of partying until morning connects the two worlds.
Jepsen’s latest project features 24 songs across its two sides, with earlier releases including “On Wires,” “After All,” “Motivation” and “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor.” The album marks her first collection of new material since 2023’s The Loveliest Time, continuing her exploration of pop music beyond the traditional boundaries of a single sound or mood.
