Ariana Grande Turns Heartbreak Into a Dark Fantasy in hate that i made you love me Official Music Video

Ariana Grande has unveiled the official music video for hate that i made you love me, bringing the emotional lead single from her upcoming album Petal to life through a haunting, cinematic visual that blends heartbreak, obsession and dark humor. The video premiered June 1 and stars actor Justin Long in the leading role.

Directed by acclaimed music video filmmaker Christian Breslauer, the visual transforms the song’s themes of emotional attachment and letting go into a surreal horror inspired narrative. Throughout the clip, Long plays a man struggling to move on as he finds himself haunted by visions of Grande, leading him through a series of increasingly bizarre and dangerous situations.

The video unfolds like a psychological thriller, featuring car crashes, ghostly apparitions, mysterious graves and dreamlike encounters that blur the line between reality and imagination. Grande appears as an elusive presence throughout the story, embodying the lingering memories that continue to haunt Long’s character long after a relationship has ended.

Musically, hate that i made you love me showcases a more restrained side of Grande’s artistry. Co-written and produced alongside longtime collaborators Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, the track pairs atmospheric production with introspective lyrics that explore regret, perception and emotional responsibility. Grande has described it as one of her favorite songs she has ever written.

The single serves as the first release from Petal, Grande’s eighth studio album, which arrives July 31. The project marks her full return to music following years focused on acting, including her acclaimed work in the Wicked films.

Fans immediately embraced both the song and its visual counterpart, praising the video’s ambitious storytelling and cinematic presentation. The release has already generated significant momentum for the Petal era, helping the track debut at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts
