Tobin Mueller – Secret Love

This gorgeous piano solo features interpretive pianist Tobin Mueller performing the great jazz standard “Secret Love”. The track is an outtake from his 2018 album, “Standard Deviations”, which reached #16 on the FM Jazz Radio charts and #18 on Independent Radio (college radio, all genres).

The video features photos taken by Tobin Mueller on his 2019 tour of the Caribbean Islands.

Secret Love (music by Sammy Fain, from the musical film Calamity Jane) introduced Doris Day to the world. Many others have covered it, from Frank Sinatra and Freddy Fender. This more romantic version belongs in the post-bop modal genre, adding hushed melancholy. A secret love can be a thrilling thing, but more often ends in tragic longing and emptiness. Mueller made this version more about sweet remembrance.

“Memorable… highly original and revealing. ‘Standard Deviations’ is one of those recording gems that offers both lovely, relaxed listening and thought-provoking complex connections. It is a recording that bears repeated attention to gather all of these subtleties, filled with rewards for those who accept the invitation.”
– Carla Süllwold, music critic for Fanfare Magazine

“‘Standard Deviations’ is an amazing jazz amalgam. It captures at its zenith Mueller’s genius ability to dance in and out of motifs and themes while paying such great respect to the jazz composers he quotes. He makes the intertwining of the composer’s intent with his own interpretation sound effortless, expansive, beautiful and awesome…”
– John LaMantia, contributing critic for Downbeat Magazine
